Johannesburg - Multi award-winning Afro-fusion band Freshlyground is back after a five-year hiatus with a new lead vocalist - Mbali Makhoba.

The 19-year-old singer has replaced the band's former vocalist Zolani Mahola who branched out in pursuit of a solo career in 2019.

The band recently took to Instagram to introduce their new lead vocalist and their latest single, Jabula, off their new upcoming album produced by Grammy-award- winner, JB Arthur who produced their album Nomvula.

"Seven years since our last release. A new voice. The same soul. Meet Mbali Makhoba - our new lead vocalist on Jabula. Produced by Grammy-winner JB Arthur. This is just the beginning," said the band.

The band's manager and co-founder Simon Atwell says that although the band will still have familiar elements, in terms of sound, their new lead vocalist "has so many ideas and a vitality that is wonderful to work with".

"There will be some elements that are familiar, but we are being led by Mbali too. Musically, we have always collaborated as a group, starting with riffs and ideas and seeing what that leads to. Mbali is fearless and has so many ideas and a vitality that is wonderful to work with," he told Henley Business School Africa.

The six-piece-ensemble band believes that the new vocalist perfectly aligns with the band's vision.

"Mbali's deep connection to South African musical traditions and contemporary artistry perfectly aligns with Freshlyground's vision. Her addition not only represents a musical evolution but also continues our commitment to sharing South Africa's vibrant culture with audiences worldwide," said the band on their official site.
