Jarren Koppel - who was the singer's manager at the time - tragically died in a helicopter crash alongside five other passengers in Panorama Gorge in Mpumalanga in 2003.
The I Can't Imagine hitmaker took to Instagram recently on what would have been his late brother's 45th birthday to share the inspiration behind the emotional song.
"In 2003, at the tender age of 23, my family lost my dear brother Jarren," he said.
"That same year, in honour of his life and legacy, and to express the pain I was feeling, I wrote a song called I Can't Imagine. This remains the most personal piece I have ever written. Today is Jarren's birthday and his life and memory stay alive through the song. Happy Birthday JJ," said the singer.
The artist had expressed the loss through his 2003 sophomore album entitled J23 as a way of paying homage to his late brother.
"Today marks 21 years since I lost my beloved younger brother Jarren. I wrote this song from a place of incredible pain and sadness. Today I post it on the anniversary of my brother's passing to celebrate and remember him, and anyone you are thinking about and missing," he said on his previous post.
