The G20 Women's Shutdown, spearheaded by the Women For Change campaign standing up for women and LGBTQIA+ community to down tools today and change their profile pictures to purple, is currently active as those participating are sharing videos of themselves across social media dressed in black — as kindly requested by the organisation — in commemoration of the Gender-Based-Violence and Femicide (GBVF) victims and survivors.
Today at 12 pm thousands of women and LGBTQIA+ community members were expected to hold a silent nationwide 15-minute lie-down. Dressed in black, to honour the lives of the 15 women murdered every single day in the country.
The broadcaster shared a video of herself on social media expressing her stance on her live radio show at 93.8 FM.
"A past couple of weeks we've seen profile pictures turn to purple, I've been in quite a few arguments regarding that and people calling me out and asking me why hasn't my profile picture been turned to purple and the reason being is purple is my favourite colour, and I won't give that to men," she said.
"I won't give that colour to abusive men.
"It was a question I didn't answer on social media because I think a lot of people get baited, there's a lot of rage bait, as opposed to the significance of tomorrow [21st November] and what we finally forced our president to do. So I refuse to give my favourite colour purple that I had on my wedding day, that I dressed my kids in when they were born to abusive men," she said.
In a direct response to a follower who disagreed with her stance and said that the colour purple in her understanding is not given to abusive men but rather to "our fallen women, sisters and children against the hands of perpetrators", the broadcaster replied that she won't associate her favourite colour with pain.
"I won’t associate my colour with pain. I honestly don’t need you to agree. This was and is my decision not opinion," she said.
